Wulin Star Exhibition Hall

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

The architectural language of YINPING YAO's Wulin Star Exhibition Hall operates as a rich symbolic system encoding multiple layers of cultural meaning through its deliberate preservation and transformation of industrial vocabulary. The corrugated metal wall panels, with their repetitive horizontal striations, evoke associations with productivity, protection, and the rhythmic nature of manufacturing processes, their continued presence honoring the labor histories embedded in such structures while their refined application suggests contemporary revaluation of industrial aesthetics. The exposed concrete columns function as temporal anchors, their weathered surfaces bearing witness to accumulated time in a manner that recalls the Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi, finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. The gleaming white truss system above introduces a contrasting symbolic register, its pristine geometry suggesting order, clarity, and intellectual framework, the skeletal visibility of structure perhaps functioning as metaphor for transparency and honest communication. The reflective floor creates a powerful symbolic doubling, traditionally associated with contemplation, self-examination, and the relationship between material and spiritual realms, here grounding celestial geometry in earthly substance. The shafts of golden light entering through wall apertures carry archetypal resonance with revelation, enlightenment, and the passage of time made visible, their angular forms moving across the floor as the day progresses like markers on a cosmic dial. The curved track system overhead introduces dynamic potential into the otherwise static composition, suggesting journey, circulation, and the possibility of transformation. The overall spatial experience invites interpretation as a meditation on heritage and innovation, where industrial past and cultural present achieve synthesis through thoughtful design intervention that neither erases history nor remains imprisoned by it.

The Wulin Star Expo belongs to the historical protected buildings three and four of the Hangzhou Oxygen Plant Complex. It was utilized sustainable design concepts to maintain the structure of historical buildings and the details of factory buildings and transformed the idle space inside the old factory buildings into positive and dynamic spaces. The Wulin Star Expo has become a beloved cultural living room for citizens.
