Long Xi Incense Stick Packaging

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024

Menghao Zeng's packaging design for Long Xi presents a sophisticated system of visual signs communicating cultural heritage, artisanal quality, and contemplative purpose through carefully orchestrated material and graphic choices. The exposed dovetail joinery functions as a powerful symbol of craft authenticity, transforming what might remain hidden structure into visible testament of skilled handwork and traditional construction methods. This transparency of making suggests honesty, integrity, and connection to woodworking lineages extending across centuries. The timber selection carries rich associative meanings: warm reddish-brown tones traditionally evoke stability, earthly grounding, and organic warmth while suggesting precious materials worthy of protecting valuable contents. The calligraphic elements activate cultural memory systems, their seal-script-derived forms connecting contemporary users to ancient writing traditions and scholarly refinement. Vermillion red appears throughout traditional visual culture as a color of celebration, vitality, and auspicious blessing, its presence here suggesting the contents carry significance beyond mere commodity. The swirling cloud motifs adorning the red sections may reference traditional iconography associated with the heavens, transformation, and the ethereal realm of incense smoke itself rising and dissipating. The circular aperture introduces geometric symbolism of wholeness and cycles while practically suggesting the aromatic function awaiting within, perhaps allowing fragrance to communicate before opening. The environmental staging upon sand creates conceptual resonance with natural elements, impermanence, and meditative traditions where sand gardens invite contemplation. Gold borders and detailing invoke associations of preciousness and ceremonial significance, elevating the package from mere container to meaningful cultural object worthy of thoughtful engagement and preservation.

This packaging cleverly blends wood and aluminum-coated bags to showcase a fusion of modern technology and Eastern culture. With a sliding wooden box for easy access, its interior stack design, topped with sponge pad cardboard, protects the product and offers branding opportunities. The bottom accessory box, featuring a convenient handle, allows easy retrieval. Its stacked structure minimizes size, saving on transportation costs while ensuring product safety. This design meets practical needs and conveys a unique bronze culture experience in line with the brand.
