Benjakitti Forest Park

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Arsomsilp's landscape intervention communicates through an eloquent vocabulary of spatial symbolism and environmental iconography that speaks to contemporary aspirations for harmonious coexistence between human settlement and natural systems. The archipelago configuration of vegetated islands floating upon reflective water surfaces evokes archetypal paradise imagery, suggesting both primordial wetland ecosystems and idealized garden realms where abundance emerges from careful cultivation. The circular and biomorphic forms of the planted mounds may reference cellular biology and organic growth patterns, positioning the park as a living organism within the urban body. The serpentine boardwalk pathways trace choreographies of discovery, their angular geometry perhaps suggesting the productive tension between human rationality and natural spontaneity, creating what might be understood as threshold spaces where visitors transition between urban consciousness and ecological awareness. The amphitheater element introduces gathering symbolism, the concentric circles traditionally associated with community, democratic assembly, and the theater as sacred space for collective experience. Water throughout the composition carries multivalent significance: as purifying element, as reflective medium for contemplation, as life-giving resource, and as symbol of time's flow and nature's cycles. The golden light suffusing the scene evokes traditional associations with enlightenment, divine blessing, and the precious quality of liminal temporal moments. The juxtaposition of organic foreground against geometric urban background may be read as visual allegory for the reconciliation of nature and culture, suggesting not opposition but complementary relationship where each defines the other. The elevated viewpoint positions the viewer as benevolent observer, perhaps evoking traditional associations between height and wisdom, overview and understanding, suggesting the comprehensive vision required to conceive such integrated environmental solutions.

Benjakitti Park is located on the site of a disused tobacco factory in central Bangkok. The park's design incorporates wetland and forest ecosystems that deliver services including urban flood management, purification of polluted canal waters, and habitat for native plants and wildlife. The boardwalks and skywalks that crisscross the park are designed to immerse visitors in nature and to encourage them to reflect upon how humans and nature might live in harmony. The designers’ ambition is for the park to demonstrate the potential for nature-based approaches to urban sustainability.
