Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024
Within the realm of contemporary commercial design, this flagship environment employs wood's ancient symbolic associations with nature, growth, shelter, and organic authenticity to construct a layered narrative about brand identity and consumer experience that transcends conventional retail semiotics. The dramatic carved ceiling structure functions symbolically as a protective canopy or cave-like shelter, archetypal forms that resonate deeply across human cultures as representations of refuge and safety, particularly meaningful for a brand whose products serve protective functions in outdoor environments, the organic undulations and flowing grain patterns evoking both the sheltering canopy of forest growth and the sculpted interior of geological formations created by elemental forces over vast time, thus positioning the retail experience within a symbolic continuum connecting human-made commerce to primordial natural processes. Wood itself carries profound cultural weight as humanity's first structural material and continues to signify warmth, authenticity, craft tradition, and environmental consciousness in contrast to industrial materials like steel, concrete, or plastic, the choice to feature figured wood with dramatically visible grain acknowledges and celebrates the material's organic origins, each swirl and striation representing years of growth and environmental response, making visible the passage of time and natural process in ways that resonate with contemporary desires for authenticity and connection to natural systems. The warm earth-tone chromatic palette dominated by amber, honey, ochre, and sienna hues operates within color semiotics as grounding, stabilizing, and comfort-inducing, these tones traditionally associated with earth, harvest, autumn, hearth fire, and domestic warmth, creating psychological associations with reliability, endurance, and organic authenticity, while the strategic introduction of cool gray treads and black metal railings provides necessary contrast that reads symbolically as contemporary precision, technological capability, and urban sophistication, the juxtaposition suggesting a brand identity that honors natural environments while employing advanced materials and engineering. The ascending staircase carries universal symbolic freight as a threshold device and transformational passage, stairs across cultures representing spiritual ascent, social climbing, increased perspective, and movement between realms or states of being, the processional quality of ascending through this sculptural environment potentially transforming the mundane act of reaching a second sales floor into a ritualized approach that prepares the visitor psychologically for commercial engagement, the upward movement aligned with positive associations of elevation, aspiration, and achievement. The organic aperture penetrating the wooden canopy might be interpreted through multiple symbolic lenses: as an eye or viewing portal connecting interior shelter to exterior wilderness, as a breath or respiration point suggesting the structure lives and breathes, as a threshold between cultivated commercial space and untamed natural realm visible beyond, or perhaps as a reminder that even the most protective shelter maintains necessary openness to light, air, and visual connection to larger contexts. The choice to expose fabrication layers and construction methodology rather than concealing them beneath smooth veneered surfaces suggests symbolic alignment with values of transparency, honesty in making, and respect for craft process, allowing visitors to understand something of how the environment was created rather than presenting it as magical appearance divorced from human labor and material reality, this legibility of process potentially resonating with consumer desires to understand product origins and manufacturing integrity. The scale relationship between human bodies ascending the stairs and the massive sculptural ceiling element hovering overhead creates a symbolic dynamic between individual human presence and something larger, more enduring, perhaps even sublime in the Romantic sense of encountering natural forces and scales that exceed human dimension, this relationship potentially evoking the experience of entering ancient forests or geological formations where human scale is diminished yet somehow honored by inclusion within grander systems, the retail environment thus transformed from mere commercial backdrop into a space that acknowledges and celebrates human smallness within larger natural contexts while simultaneously offering shelter and orientation through thoughtful architectural design.
The design team hunted for fallen dead trees in the forest and transformed them into decorative columns by slicing and encasing them in glass. The tree rings on these columns serve as a visual testament to the trials and tribulations endured by the trees during their growth in nature a perseverance that resonates with the spirit of Arcteryx, which aims to break through limits and keep reaching upwards. The concept of tree holes is also applied to the first floor, where each scene draws inspiration from nature, catering to the desires of outdoor enthusiasts.
