249 Design Hotel Hospitality Building

The threshold as symbolic portal manifests powerfully in Torres Arquitetos's hospitality architecture, where the approach sequence functions as ritual passage from everyday world into sanctuary space, the ground-embedded lights serving as luminous breadcrumbs guiding travelers toward refuge and restoration. The triangular gable assumes archetypal significance as the universal symbol of shelter and home, here expanded to monumental scale yet retaining its essential message of protective enclosure, while the extensive glazing transforms this archetypal form into revelation rather than concealment—the dwelling that offers itself openly to approaching guests. Material symbolism operates through deliberate juxtaposition: stone carries connotations of geological permanence, stability, and connection to earth; timber speaks to organic warmth, craft tradition, and human scale; glass suggests transparency, honesty, and the dissolution of boundaries between interior comfort and exterior landscape. The warm amber illumination radiating through glazed surfaces during twilight hours activates deep associations with hearth, welcome, and human gathering—the primal comfort of firelight visible from the path suggesting safety and community ahead. The horizontal emphasis of the Prairie-influenced wing evokes rootedness and landscape integration, while vertical stone tower elements suggest aspiration and landmark presence. The twilight moment itself carries symbolic weight as liminal time between day and night, work and rest, journey and arrival—the building's transformation from daytime solidity into evening beacon mirrors the traveler's own transformation from weary journeyer into welcomed guest. The tropical plantings introduce biophilic elements suggesting abundance, growth, and the nurturing qualities of cultivated nature, framing the approach as passage through garden into dwelling.

The 249 Design Hotel is a retrofit project inspired in the German vernacular architecture. Located in the tourist city of Gramado, the result was a project that creates a dialogue between contemporary and existing architecture in a respectful and harmonious way, using materiality as an agent of integration of everything. Steel, wood and stone are the connectors that unite the whole and bring the external area into the interior of the building. The north of the project was that we made all decisions thinking in the integration between the design and the hotel guests.
