Moon and Tea for Mid Autumn Gift Box Packaging

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

The symbolic architecture of Chenxiang Xi's gift box design constructs a layered narrative of cultural continuity, seasonal celebration, and the poetics of giving through carefully orchestrated material and formal choices. The circular motifs embedded within the relief pattern carry profound significance, traditionally representing completeness, family unity, and the full moon that anchors autumnal festival observance, while their abstracted geometric treatment suggests contemporary reinterpretation of these ancient associations. The quaternity of mooncakes arranged in linear procession activates numerological symbolism associated with earthly stability, the four directions, and seasonal completion, while their chromatic progression from green through blue and pink to amber may evoke the passage from spring vitality through summer contemplation to autumnal harvest warmth. The choice of natural wood framing introduces organic authenticity and craft heritage into dialogue with the pristine manufactured precision of the white panel, suggesting reconciliation between nature and culture, tradition and innovation. The vermillion seal functions as a mark of authenticity and blessing within traditional gift culture, its concentrated chromatic warmth operating as a symbolic life force against the contemplative coolness of the surrounding whites. The vertical format of the primary container echoes scroll and hanging banner traditions, establishing ceremonial formality while the horizontal carrying element transforms the object into a portable gift, ready for the ritual exchange that completes its symbolic function. The translucent materiality of the mooncakes themselves suggests purity, refinement, and the ephemeral beauty of confectionery art meant to be consumed in shared enjoyment. The cylindrical tea vessel introduces circular completeness while its gold finish elevates the contents to precious status, suggesting that the enclosed tea carries significance beyond mere beverage. Together, these elements construct a symbolic system wherein giving becomes ceremony, receiving becomes honor, and the festival becomes renewal of bonds through materially beautiful and culturally resonant exchange.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally celebrated in China in the eighth month of the lunar year. The designers created a unique gift box for Vanke for this year's full-moon festival. It has a distinctly Chinese feel, elegant and beautiful, with a bamboo box body and white porcelain tea plate. The box contains moon cakes with local colored rice and Pu-erh tea. When opened, the body of the box and the porcelain cover become a tea tray; the box doubles as a soft lamp while drinking tea and watching the moon.
