Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022
Akira Nakagomi's Splash Proof Partition operates within a rich symbolic vocabulary that elevates functional furniture into meaningful object. The circular form carries profound archetypal weight, representing wholeness, protection, and the eternal cycle, here deployed as a literal shield that simultaneously suggests the encompassing care surrounding childhood. The graduated chromatic field from rose through clear to yellow may evoke the passage of day, from dawn warmth through midday clarity to evening glow, perhaps suggesting the temporal nature of childhood itself or the cyclical rhythms of domestic ritual. The transparency of the material speaks to contemporary values of visibility and connection, the protective function accomplished without visual isolation, suggesting that safety and intimacy need not oppose each other. The brass structural elements introduce associations of value, permanence, and refined craftsmanship, their warm golden tones traditionally linked to solar energy, vitality, and precious worth. The wooden vessels present in the composition extend this material symbolism, their turned forms suggesting handcraft traditions and the organic warmth of natural materials against the technological achievement of gradient acrylic. The thistle, often symbolizing resilience and protection in heraldic traditions, provides a subtle symbolic echo of the partition's protective function. The broccoli, with its tree-like florets, might be read as miniature nature brought to the table, while the child's contemplative pose invokes countless artistic traditions of figures lost in thought. The overall composition creates a mandala-like arrangement, with the circular partition forming a protective aureole around the young figure, suggesting sacred space carved within ordinary domestic life.
Many of Covid-19's temporary splash-proof partitions are cheaply designed. So Akira Nakagomi designed a splash-proof partition to add color to life, rather than a cheap temporary one. It is a simple configuration of a circular acrylic supported by a bent brass rod, and the rod is fixed with a brass cylinder. Another set can also be connected and fixed around the brass weight. The Object is a product like an art piece that emphasizes both aesthetics and function. The Object is also sustainable in that it can be displayed as an art piece rather than being unnecessary after the Covid-19.
