Shenzhen Jiangangshan Hill Park Wayfinding Signage System

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

The layered construction of Updesign's wayfinding pylon operates as a sophisticated system of spatial and cultural communication wherein the apparent simplicity of directional signage unfolds into multiple registers of meaning that reward contemplative engagement. The vertical orientation carries archetypal associations with ascent, aspiration, and threshold marking, functioning as contemporary menhir or boundary stone that demarcates transition between zones while establishing place identity through distinctive visual character. The die-cut negative space technique transforms utilitarian typography into pictorial frame, the P letterform becoming portal through which viewers glimpse an idealized natural vignette, suggesting that parking represents threshold to natural sanctuary rather than mere vehicular accommodation. The bird-upon-branch motif activates deep cultural symbolism across traditions, birds representing freedom, transcendence, and connection between earthly and celestial realms, while the branch signifies growth, rootedness, and the organic networks that sustain life. The cobalt blue ground behind the silhouette carries associations with sky, water, contemplation, and infinite depth, creating visual metaphor wherein functional navigation points toward spiritual refreshment available within the green spaces beyond. The chromatic relationship between neutral gray exterior and saturated blue interior suggests emergence from quotidian routine into heightened experience, the color temperature shift from cool neutral to deeper blue-violet evoking the phenomenological transition from urban context to natural refuge. The layered material construction embodies threshold symbolism architecturally, the physical depth between surfaces manifesting the conceptual journey from arrival to immersion the park experience offers. The integration of naturalistic imagery within geometric framework suggests harmony between human ordering systems and organic complexity, proposing that thoughtful design may honor rather than dominate natural contexts through sensitive material selection and iconographic celebration of local ecological character.

Henri Rousseau's impressionist style is ingeniously applied as the main visual elements into this project. Wayfinding signs are designed as interesting impressionist-illustration silhouettes here and there in the park, creating a tranquil eco-friendly hilly aura for visitors. The artist's thoughts and the project's purposes are brought into resonance by the concept of harmony between human and nature.
