UND Design Studio's Tea Shop deploys a sophisticated vocabulary of spatial and material symbolism that communicates layered cultural meanings through careful architectural orchestration. The central timber column operates as axis mundi, the archetypal world pillar connecting terrestrial and celestial realms, its penetration through the ceiling aperture toward light above evoking traditional cosmological symbols of spiritual ascent and connection between earthly existence and transcendent dimensions. The cruciform beam arrangement surrounding this vertical element suggests the intersection of horizontal worldly concerns with vertical spiritual aspiration, a geometric configuration resonant across multiple wisdom traditions as symbol of orientation and centered presence. Material choices encode deliberate cultural associations: natural timber with visible grain speaks to authenticity, organic warmth, and connection to living natural systems, while the surrounding achromatic palette of white and gray suggests purity, emptiness in the generative sense, and the cleared mental space necessary for contemplative practice. The circular ceiling aperture functions as oculus, eye of heaven, and portal through which light descends as metaphor for illumination and awareness. Furniture geometries reduced to essential forms, the cube representing stability and earthly presence, the cone suggesting aspiration and upward movement, participate in a symbolic vocabulary of archetypal shapes that transcend specific cultural reference while remaining legible across traditions. The overall spatial organization, moving from utilitarian entrance through ceremonial threshold marked by the column toward the ritual space of the service counter, follows processional patterns common to sacred architecture, suggesting that tea consumption here becomes elevated from mere refreshment to mindful practice. The transparency of exposed systems suggests nothing hidden, material honesty as spiritual value, while the luminous atmosphere evokes qualities of clarity and presence central to contemplative traditions.
The integration of Zen and Martial arts is the concept of this project, and the combination of local culture and brand culture is the biggest feature. When mentioning Foshan, the famous Wing Chun of Yip Man (Bruce lee's master) will come to mind. The unique cultural geographical characteristics combining with brand culture advocating new tea-drinking methods have formed the concept of Zen tea and Martial arts. How to express traditional cultural symbols modernly is also the theme of the exploration.
